Legal information
Terms and Conditions
The rules for using Per Se. Read them before creating your account.
Last updated: October 11, 2026
These terms are a contract between you and Per Se ("we"). By creating an account or using the website and application (the "Service") you agree to be bound by them. If you disagree with any part, do not use the Service.
1. We are not attorneys
Per Se is NOT a law firm. We are NOT attorneys, nor accredited legal assistants acting as such. We do NOT provide legal advice, representation, or legal opinions of any kind. Nothing you find in the Service constitutes legal advice.
So that there is no ambiguity, this specifically means that:
- No attorney-client relationship exists between you and us, and none is created by using the Service, writing to us, or paying for a subscription.
- What you tell us is NOT covered by attorney-client privilege. It could be requested by a court or by the opposing party in your proceeding.
- We do not tell you what to do in your case, what strategy to follow, or what your chances of winning are. The information in the Service is general and educational; your case is specific.
- The assistant's form suggestions are informational guidance based on the answers you enter. They are not a legal determination of what you must file. Always verify the correct forms for your situation with the court, an attorney, or your court's free Self-Help Center.
- We do not review, correct, or validate the content of what you write on your forms.
- We do not file documents with any court on your behalf, do not effect service of process, and do not represent you in any proceeding.
- We do not calculate procedural deadlines for you and do not guarantee you will meet them. Deadlines are your responsibility.
If you need legal advice, consult an attorney licensed in California. You can find free or low-cost help at your court's Self-Help Center and at selfhelp.courts.ca.gov. The State Bar of California offers lawyer referral services.
1.1 Why we are not a Legal Document Assistant
California requires anyone who, for compensation, prepares or completes legal documents at the specific direction of a self-represented person to register as a Legal Document Assistant ("LDA") with the relevant county (California Business and Professions Code §6400 et seq.). Per Se does not provide that kind of service: we do not select which form you need, we do not fill out your forms, we do not decide what to write on them, and we do not file them with any court on your behalf. What we offer is general information published the same way for every person who uses the Service, and a space where you store, organize, and download your own files. We accordingly understand this activity to fall outside the legal definition of LDA services. If we ever offered a service that did fit that definition, we would register as the law requires before offering it.
In short and without hedging: Per Se is an organization and information tool that makes the work of running your own case easier. It is not advice, it does not substitute for an attorney, and we are not responsible for the decisions you make or for the outcome of your court proceeding. That responsibility is, at all times, yours.
2. What the Service is
Per Se is an organization and information tool for people representing themselves (pro se) in California family law proceedings. The Service lets you:
- Answer a questionnaire to get an indicative list of forms commonly used in situations like the one you describe.
- Read informational guides on procedures, courtroom etiquette, and terminology.
- Upload, store, and organize your case documents in a private area of your account, and download them whenever you need them.
- Track your case progress and the status of each form.
- Access educational articles on the legal and emotional aspects of the process.
Official California Judicial Council forms are public and free, available at courts.ca.gov. Per Se does not sell them: what we offer is the environment where you store and organize your paperwork, along with informational context and tracking.
Our role is to provide the environment. We store your files and return them when you ask for them; we do not read them, assess them, correct them, or send them to anyone. What you choose to upload, how you organize it, and what you do with it afterwards is your decision.
3. Requirements for using the Service
- You must be at least 18 and legally able to enter into a contract.
- You must provide accurate information when registering and keep it up to date.
- You are responsible for the confidentiality of your password and for all activity on your account.
- One account belongs to one person. Do not share or transfer it.
- You must notify us immediately at perseamobileapp@gmail.com if you detect unauthorized use of your account.
4. Subscriptions, pricing, and payment
The Service offers a free plan and paid plans. The applicable conditions are:
- Prices are shown in U.S. dollars and do not include any applicable taxes.
- Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel before the renewal date.
- You may cancel at any time from your account or by writing to perseamobileapp@gmail.com. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the period already paid for; you keep access until then.
- Unless applicable law requires otherwise, payments are non-refundable for periods already begun.
- We may change prices. We will give you at least 30 days' notice and the change will apply from your next renewal. If you disagree, you may cancel before that date.
- If a charge is declined, we may suspend access to paid features until the situation is resolved.
Payment processing is handled by an external provider. We do not store your full card details on our servers.
5. Acceptable use
In using the Service you agree NOT to:
- Hold yourself out as an attorney, or use the Service to provide legal services to third parties.
- Use the Service to harass, threaten, intimidate, or surveil another person, including the opposing party in your proceeding.
- Enter false information for the purpose of misleading a court.
- Attempt to access accounts, data, or systems that are not yours.
- Reverse engineer, scrape content in bulk, overload the infrastructure, or circumvent security measures and usage limits.
- Copy, resell, sublicense, or redistribute the Service's content for commercial purposes.
- Upload malicious code or content that infringes third-party rights or the law.
- Use the storage as a general file repository unrelated to your case, or as a means of distributing content to other people.
We may suspend or close accounts that break these rules, with or without prior notice depending on severity.
6. Your documents and your content
Everything you enter or upload remains yours. We claim no ownership of it and acquire no rights over it. You grant us only the limited, indispensable license to store it, host it, and display it back to you within the Service. That license does not let us publish it, transfer it, exploit it, or use it for any other purpose, and it ends when you delete the content or close your account.
6.1 Access
Your documents are kept in a private area tied to your account and are accessible only with your credentials. We do not share them with other users or with third parties. The narrow exceptions in which our staff could access the content are described in the Privacy Notice and are limited to an express request from you, an indispensable technical repair, or a valid legal obligation.
6.2 Your responsibility for what you upload
- You must have the right to upload and keep each file. Do not upload third-party documents you have no right to store.
- You are responsible for the accuracy, content, and legality of what you store.
- Even though we store your files, always keep your own copy of anything important. The Service is a space for organizing and storing, not a guaranteed backup system: a technical fault, a deletion on your part, or closing your account can leave you without access.
- Keep documents with an imminent court deadline available outside Per Se as well. Do not depend on a single place for something you must file on time.
6.3 Limits and content removal
We may set reasonable limits on file size, total space, and accepted formats, and adjust them with advance notice when the change affects you. We may remove or block content that is manifestly unlawful, that infringes third-party rights, or where a competent authority orders us to. Unless the law forbids it, we will tell you if that happens.
6.4 Copyright infringement (DMCA)
We respect the intellectual property of others and expect the same from anyone using the Service. If you believe in good faith that content stored in the Service infringes your copyright, send a written notice to perseamobileapp@gmail.com including: your physical or electronic signature; identification of the copyrighted work; identification and location of the content you are flagging; your contact details; a statement that the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law; and a statement, made under penalty of perjury, that the information is accurate and that you are authorized to act on the owner's behalf. We will process valid notices under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. §512). Filing a notice you know to be false can expose you to legal liability.
7. Our intellectual property
The site design, the software, the original text, the guides, the articles, the "Per Se" mark and its logos belong to us or are used under license, and are protected by intellectual property law. You may use them for your personal, non-commercial use within the Service. Any other use requires our written permission.
Official California Judicial Council forms and court content are public documents and do not belong to us.
8. Third-party content and links
The Service links to third-party sites such as courts.ca.gov, selfhelp.courts.ca.gov, leginfo.legislature.ca.gov, and YouTube videos. We do not control those sites, are not responsible for their content or availability, and their inclusion does not imply endorsement. When you visit them, their own terms and policies apply.
9. No warranties
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available." To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all express or implied warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
In particular, we do not warrant that:
- The information in the Service is complete, current, or applicable to your specific situation. Laws and forms change.
- The suggested forms are the correct ones for your case.
- Using the Service will produce any favorable outcome in your proceeding.
- The Service will operate without interruption, error, or data loss.
- The Spanish and English versions of the content are accurate or equivalent in every nuance. They are two independent drafts meant to convey the same idea, not a word-for-word translation of each other; if in doubt, check with a professional.
- The third-party providers the Service depends on (hosting, authentication, file storage) will always be available. Their outages are outside our control.
- The Service is compatible with any particular device, browser, or internet connection.
10. Limitation of liability
We are not responsible for missed hearings, forms rejected by the court, missed deadlines, or any consequence of your court proceeding, including the loss of custody, support, property, or any other right. The Service is exclusively an organization and general-information tool that makes your work easier; running your case, and every decision about it, is your responsibility.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, nor for lost profits, lost data, lost procedural opportunity, missed deadlines, or adverse outcomes in your court proceeding, even if we had been advised of the possibility.
Our total cumulative liability for any claim relating to the Service will not exceed the greater of: the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim, or one hundred dollars ($100).
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or the limitation of certain damages. In that case these limitations apply to the fullest extent the law permits, and you keep the rights the law grants you on a mandatory basis.
11. Indemnification
You agree to hold us harmless from claims, damages, losses, and reasonable defense costs arising from your use of the Service, your breach of these terms, the information you enter, or the infringement of third-party rights.
12. Term and termination
You can close your account at any time from your profile or by writing to us. We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these terms, if required for legal or security reasons, or if we stop providing the Service; in that last case we will give you reasonable advance notice.
Download your documents before closing your account. When you close it we delete your files along with the rest of your data, as described in the Privacy Notice, and that deletion is permanent. If we are the ones suspending or terminating your access, and unless a legal prohibition or security risk prevents it, we will give you a reasonable period of at least 30 days to download what you have stored. If we were to stop providing the Service, we would notify you far enough in advance for you to retrieve your documents.
The sections on intellectual property, no warranties, limitation of liability, indemnification, and governing law survive termination.
13. Governing law and dispute resolution
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without applying its conflict of law rules. Any dispute will be submitted to the competent state or federal courts of Los Angeles County, California, and both parties accept their jurisdiction.
Before starting legal action, both parties will attempt to resolve the matter in good faith for 30 days from written notice to perseamobileapp@gmail.com. Nothing above prevents you from going to small claims court if your claim qualifies.
14. Accessibility
We want the Service to be usable by as many people as possible, including people with disabilities. We work on an ongoing basis to bring the Service closer to recognized accessibility guidelines, such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). We may not yet fully meet them on every screen.
If you run into an accessibility barrier, or need the content in an alternative format, write to us at perseamobileapp@gmail.com describing the difficulty, the page where it happened, and, if you know it, the assistive technology you use. We will respond with a fix or a reasonable alternative within a short time.
15. Changes to these terms
We may modify these terms. The date of the latest revision appears at the top. If a change is substantial, we will notify you by email or a prominent notice at least 30 days in advance. If you keep using the Service after that date, we understand you accept the new version.
16. General provisions
- If a court finds any clause invalid, the rest remains in force.
- Our not exercising a right at a given time does not mean we waive it.
- You may not assign these terms without our consent; we may assign them in a merger or sale of the business.
- These terms, together with the Privacy Notice, constitute the entire agreement between the parties regarding the Service.
- In the event of any discrepancy between the Spanish and English versions of these terms, the Spanish version prevails.
